NHS COMING TOGETHER

Published on

The NHS has undoubtedly gone through hell since the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic, not disregarding many others also have. They have shown how much we, the public, rely on them and how much we disregard them. If the petty 1% pay rise given to all NHS staff was enough of a punch to the face, I am sure the 3.1% pay rise made for government MPS in 2020 felt like a body slam.

The NHS has suffered so much through this pandemic, putting their lives on the line unaware if they would catch this invisible killer. The immense stress they must be under cannot be described with a few simple words and how the public supported them is even fewer. Yes, clapping in support of the NHS on a Thursday afternoon was a heart-warming gesture from the public. However, it was just a gesture. But we, as a whole country, could have done so much more for them than clapping for four weeks every Thursday and never doing it again.

An amazing elderly man named Captain Sir Tomas Moore raised nearly over £33 million for NHS based charities. He did over a hundred laps of his garden in Bedfordshire, every step he took was filled with hope and kindness. Not to forget to mention, he was 100 years old, and he served his country in World War two, he deserves nothing but the highest of respect from our country. He was later knighted by her majesty, Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle, everyone couldn’t agree more it was well deserved. Sadly, he passed away from COVID 19 in early 2021 with his family by his side.

How could a single man do so much for the NHS with support from thousands of people? While our government are taking U-turns like it’s a driving lesson, aren’t they meant to be the ones good at making decisions? However, that is a topic for another time.

While things have been difficult for the NHS, stories have been coming through of communities and big brands showing their own kindness. McDonald’s is a well-known fast-food brand announced in July of 2021 that members of the NHS will be given 20% off all orders until the end of the year. However, this only applies with the correct ID is shown, while this is frustrating for some it is there to avoid people exploiting this deal. Not only the big brands are chipping in, but smaller and more local takeaways are also delivering to local hospitals giving out free food for the NHS staff. This all comes along with local taxi services giving free rides to staff members for emergency call-ins and normal shifts too. These types of stories are heard all the time but they're most prominent at Christmas time, and it warms our hearts to read them.

NHS will always have support from the public, however, how we show it is very important. Whether it be through donating money or doing something small by doing a fundraiser. Coming together as a community to support a bigger cause is the main point of all of this.
